The kajals war in India just got hotter with 2 new entrants in the market. L’Oreal Paris recently launched a new kajal called New Magique Kajal Bold and Maybelline India also reformulated their old Colossal in a darker and more creamier form. I’ve been testing out the new Maybelline The Colossal Kajal Super Black for over two weeks now and here is the detailed review with a comparison of the old Colossal Kajal as well. Read on to know if this one is better than the older variant.

Packaging
The new Maybelline Colossal Kajal comes as a black retractable pencil packaging with a click shut cap. The black packaging has yellow accents, the same color scheme as the older kajal but the colors have been swapped. I find the black packaging more attractive than the yellow one which was a bit umm kiddish in comparison?
Shade & Pigmenttaion
The Maybelline Colossal Kajal Super Black is jet black in color with an intense finish. Compared to the older Colossal kajal, this is definitely more pigmented especially on the waterline as the older one hardly used to show up on me in a swipe or too. However, I find the Lakme Eyeconic Kajal and Faces Magneteyes Kajal slightly more pigmented and darker than the new Maybelline Kajal.
Texture
The Colossal Kajal has a creamy and smooth formula which is creamier than the older variant. It glides easily on the waterline and doesn’t break. However, the weather is still pleasant in Delhi so it’ll be interesting to see if it doesn’t break in the hot summers as well.
Staying Power
Maybelline Colossal Super Black Kajal claims to have a 16 hr formula which is probably a bit over hyped. The kajal stays put for 4-5 hours on my waterline after which it starts fading and on my lids, it easily lasts upto 8-9 hours. The formula is smudge proof which is so much better than the old Maybelline Colossal Kajal that used to smudge like crazy on me. The wear time has definitely been worked upon in the new formula.
Comparison: New Maybelline Colossal Kajal Super Black vs Old Maybelline Colossal Kajal 12hrs
Besides the change in the color of the packaging, the new kajal is a hint more creamier, more pigmented and has greater staying power. However, all that for the price hike isn’t justified. I prefer the Faces Magneteyes Kajal which is more pigmented at half the price tag or even the Lakme Eyeconic Kajal if you do not have sensitive eyes. So is it the best kajal in India? Its a good kajal but not the best for the price.
Pros of Maybelline The Colossal Kajal Super Black
1) Creamy and smooth texture
2) Does not tug
3) A dark jet black kajal
4) Well Pigmented
5) Smudge proof
6) Good staying power
Cons of Maybelline The Colossal Kajal Super Black
1) Starts fading from the waterline and does not stay put for 16hrs
2) Too much of a price hike
HBM Rating
HBM Recommendation: Maybelline The Colossal Kajal Super Black is a pigmented jet black kajal which is creamy and long lasting. It is definitely better than the older variant however it does not justify the price hike. If you’re a Maybelline loyalist then its worth giving it a try.
