How to Shave Correctly: Tips & Tricks!
Hey guys,
So I’m really looking forward to writing this post!! As you all might remember I took to shaving a little while ago and I’ve been loving my skin ever since. You can read all about my experience here. Anyway, during the whole shaving shebang, I learnt quite a lot of things and gathered a lot of information. So I decided to put it all together in one handy little post so that it’ll be helpful for you guys and share the correct way of shaving to avoid nicks and razor burns.
Using a razor for the first time? How do you use a razor? How do you shave?
Shaving can be done both dry and wet. If you prefer dry shaving, I would recommend applying some kind of oil or a hair conditioner on your skin so that the razor has the necessary slip on your skin and does not cause irritations or cuts and burns.
If you prefer to wet shave then use a shaving gel instead of a normal bar soap. Bar soaps are harsh and almost always lead to cuts and burns. Specifically formulated shaving gels provide really great shaving options.
Its always best to shave in the direction of hair growth not against it. If your skin ends up being bumpy and rough, you know why it happened. Shaving against the hair growth will give you a close shave but then it ends up making your dry and irritated.Once you’re done shaving, rinse off and do not repeat shave on the same area. Repeating shaving can cause redness and razor burn. So try to get as much hair out before you’re done and finish off by rinsing.
When should you shave?
Surprisingly, not many people know this. Shaving is best done before bed. Yep, not in the mornings but at night. This is because your hair follicle retreats slightly during your sleep time. This makes the hair stay in a little longer and can give you an extra day between shaves. Also, shave after you’ve had a shower, not before. This opens up your skin pores from the warm water and brings up the hair roots which will mean that you will get a closer shave.
How often can you shave?
Usually hair starts to grow back out about the fourth day from the day I shave first. So I usually give it a day between shavings. You can also go right ahead and shave every single day if you need to. It does not cause any kind of harm to your skin.
What steps should you take for after shaving skin care?
If you’re using oil for shaving, then you’re good to go with just a rinse. Oils are naturally moisturizing and you don’t really need any extra skin care. If you chose a shaving cream or shaving gel, then I would recommend applying a moisturizer after you rinse and pat dry. This is completely optional but I would still recommend you do it since it not only makes your skin hydrated and soft, but also provides added shine!!
Is shaving better than using depilatory creams?
In my opinion shaving is definitely better than depilatory creams. Firstly, there is no waiting time for shaving unlike the depilatory cream which has to act on the hair once you apply it. Secondly, cleaning up after depilatory creams is a mess unlike shaving which is completely mess free. Thirdly, depilatory creams are filled with chemical ingredients which sort of melt away your hair at the base which is your skin. So basically we’re exposing our skin to so many chemicals which is definitely a step down from shaving!!
