Indian Fashion Blog: OOTD- How to style grunge!
With the start of the new year, I wanted to do things differently. Start experimenting with different trends and play with my wardrobe. Grunge has always been in trend ever since rock bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana especially Kurt Cobain etc.rocked it. Grunge fashion is comfortable, edgy, messy and is heavily influenced by flannel shirts. Be it ripped jeans, tattered leggings, oversized plaid shirts or high tops & combat boots, grunge fashion always grabs attention.

For someone like me who is more of a girly and “dressy” kind of a person, grunge isn’t really my style. So I decided to experiment and dress up grunge, hence came about dressy grunge 😉 Something that is edgy yet feminine, stylish yet unconventional, eye catching yet wearable! I guess I spinned a whole new trend eh :p So here is how you can dress up grunge without scandalizing everyone around you!
One of the most popular elements of grunge fashion besides plaid flannel shirts are ripped denims or leggings. The classic leggings when tattered here and there not only look super cool but add a fashion forward vibe to your whole look. If you aren’t comfortable rocking leggings that are ripped around your thighs, you can go for the ones that are tattered on the sides which look equally rad. You can find many options at F21 or just hop on to StalkBuyLove where I got my ripped leggings.
Or better yet, why not D-I-Y them? 😉 Talking about the pair I got from SBL, its extremely comfortable, fits me well, makes my butt look hot and doesn’t look too messy. I can probably even get away by wearing it to an event. I did make some changes to it as the ripped panels were a little too structured. I got a every alternate panel stitched because I preferred it over the “structured distress”
Grunge is also about layering so I paired my ripped leggings with a black cardigan that has a simple cowl neck perfect for winters. Such necklines are great for skinny women as they add an illusion of curves due to the softly draped folds. Depending on the length it can also help camouflage a bigger bust(lucky you, though) so win-win I say! If you do not have a cowl neck shirt or cardigan you can always wrap around a cowl neck scarf.
I’ve been big on blazers this season and I felt the perfect way to dress up the grunge look was with this coral lace blazer by StalkBuyLove. The lace blazer looks sophisticated and is well structured with light shoulder pads that give an illusion of better posture especially if you have sloping shoulder. I just adore the collection of blazers at SBL, they have a great variety be it leather jackets, floral blazers or cropped ones at an affordable price tag! From edgy to sophisticated, you’ll find one that catches your fancy.
Ideally, combat boots, high top sneakers or just a pair of converse look great with such a look but I wanted to added more color so I chose to wear this bright pair of loafers by Liberty. I’ve rarely come across such a colorful combo in loafers so I’m glad I ended up getting shoe bite on a recent shopping trip and checked out Liberty! Even though it is a size too big but I could not resist them! They also had this in a mint color which was equally pretty.
If you’re rocking the grunge trend then go easy on the accessories. Just a plain leather band would do. I only wore 2 rings, a delicate floral ring which totally goes against the grunge vibe and ofcourse my love for bows had to continue with a simple black bow ring. As for my bag, I carried a faux leopard sling bag which is made from leather and can carry alot of things. I hate bags with leather slings and much prefer bags with such chains.
For my makeup, I rocked a smudged smokey eye as grunge is all about bold and messy eyes with a bright red-orange pout from L’Oreal Collection Star Red Lipsticks. This range has 7 flattering reds for every skintone. I’m wearing Pure Fire which is fiery, feisty and bold. It lats upto 6-7 hours and is a total attention grabber. While shooting this look, I even had 2 gals ask me which lip color I was wearing!
